Cape May Café at Disney

March 20, 2013

The Cape May Café has been named by many of my Disney friends as one of their favorite dining experiences on property. So I was excited to give it a try on my most recent trip to Walt Disney World.

The Cape May Café is located in the Beach Club Resort, a short walk from our room at the Boardwalk. The restaurant offers buffet dining for breakfast (7:30 am – 11:30 am) and dinner (4:30 pm – 9:00 pm).  While I have heard the food found on the dinner buffet is delicious, we chose breakfast for one reason: the characters! During our breakfast we were visited by Goofy, Donald and Minnie.

We had made advanced dining reservations for 8:00 am on a Saturday, and we were pleasantly surprised to find the Cape May Cafe was not packed when we sat down.

The atmosphere of the Cape May Café was light and airy and I did feel like I was at a beach resort. There was a laid-back, New England feel that ties right in to the resort and restaurant’s theming. The characters were even dressed for a day at the beach!

The buffet was probably one of the best I had seen because I like variety, and there was plenty here. One side of the buffet showcased the hot offerings, while another side offered the cold. There was also a separate area with a variety of baked goods.

We have come to expect certain staples at a Disney breakfast buffet, such as Mickey Mouse waffles. And we were not disappointed. But in addition, there was a large variety of choices that included meats and cheeses, and of course the Cape May Café French Toast Bread Pudding (delicious!). My favorite offerings were the four cheese scrambled eggs and the frittatas.

If you are considering the Cape May Café for breakfast, I would highly suggest an early reservation time. When we sat down, the restaurant was barely 1/3rd full. This means no lines at the buffet. It also means a lot more character interactions. Goofy, Donald and Minnie each came to our table three different times and it made for a lot of fun! During his third visit, Goofy professed his love for me. But, alas, just as I was making plans to run away to Disney World to be with him, I saw him professing his love for another guest! That is what I get for falling for one of the world’s most loveable characters!

As we were finishing our meal the restaurant slowly started getting busier. We left around 9:30 am and the line was substantially longer.

An added benefit of this location? It is within walking distance of Epcot’s International Gateway, or you can hop a boat for a short ride to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It is the perfect way to start your day before visiting either of these parks!

Disney Kouzzina Review

March 14, 2013

Before my most recent trip to Walt Disney World, Kouzzina wasn’t even on my radar. I knew Cat Cora (of Iron Chef fame) had a restaurant on the Boardwalk, but I was always too busy playing in the parks, or going to character meals to consider it. But my latest trip has changed my tune!

Cat Cora Iron Chef

We were staying on the Boardwalk during this trip, so when my travel companions suggested Kouzzina for our first night in Disney World, I thought it would be great since it would be a quick walk from our room. They had dined there on a previous trip and thought we would all enjoy it.

What I found was a restaurant that seemed so serene I almost forgot I was on Disney property, however the service was certainly of the high quality we have come to expect from Disney.

Since we had Advanced Dining Reservations, we were quickly seated at Kouzzina. Our waiter came over and told us that the dishes on the menu were inspired by the recipes Cat Cora grew up making with her grandparents. As Chef Cora is from Mississippi, our waiter described the cuisine as “Southern-style Greek”.

Before our meal, we were served bread with two different types of olive oils for dipping and along with some olives. All were wonderful!

I ordered the oak-fired pork tenderloin served with feta gremolata, zucchini cornbread and vegetables*. At the chef’s suggestions, the pork was cooked to medium. To say I enjoyed my pork would be an understatement. I still have dreams about it! It was tender and full of flavor. The feta gremolata added the perfect accent, without overpowering the flavor of the tenderloin. I did manage to stop myself from licking the plate.

For dessert I ordered the baklava (pistachio-walnut and cinnamon pastry with vanilla praline gelato*). It was the perfect ending to my meal, as it was not as sweet as the baklava I usually get here in Detroit. One of my friends got the loukoumades (freshly made Greek doughnuts drizzled with warm honey and cinnamon*) and let me try one. Neither would be a bad choice to end a wonderful meal at Kouzzina!

During the meal the manager visited our table twice to make sure we were all enjoying ourselves. The entire staff was really friendly and attentive.

And I have been raving about Kouzzina ever since! Upon my return home I have had several people suggest their breakfast. Upon viewing the vast and varied menu, I think it will be on my must-do list for our next trip. The offerings range from a traditional Mickey Waffle to the more exotic creations that I am drawn to such as the Stacked Kouzzina Breakfast (Two poached eggs, kalamata olive toast, artichoke spread, and sweet potato hash with choice of bacon or chicken sausage*).

I am very happy that Kouzzina by Cat Cora is now on my Disney radar!

Disney’s Castaway Cay

March 13, 2013

I recently had the opportunity to take a cruise on the Disney Dream and stop at Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island.  With this being my first cruise with Disney I was not sure what to expect when we left the ship and headed toward the beach.

Disney Cruise

First, let me say, that even the island had the service and the quality that you would expect from Disney.  The cast members were friendly, the roadways and beaches were extremely clean, and the water was clear.

Once off the ship you have the choice to walk to the beaches or to take a trolley.  Since we were going to the adults only beach we chose to take the trolley.  To get to the adults only beach you had to get off one trolley and get on another one.  There were lots of beach chairs and umbrellas once we got to the beach.

After just a few minutes on the beach a cast member met with us and asked if we needed anything.  They will bring you free drinks (water, tea, soda) or you can use your ship key to pay for other types of drinks.

We laid out on the beach for quite a while and then heard a familiar voice from the shore.  Jack Sparrow had come to visit the guests on the beach!  It was really neat and he was definitely playing the part.  He posed for pictures and spoke with all the guests who were interested.  I saw pictures from the family beach and there were lots of characters there as well!  This is just one of the many fun things about Disney’s Castaway Cay!

Castaway Cay

After being beach bums for a while we headed to lunch.  Each beach, the family beach and the adults only beach, has a restaurant.  The food was awesome and there was a good variety including hot dogs, hamburgers, fruit, chips, and ice cream.  It was all you could eat or as little as you could eat.

After eating we decided to head back to the ship, but decided first to take a stroll to take in the sites.  We did a little shopping along the way.  You can use your ship key to purchase your items at all but one store.  This particular store has items that you might find in Nassau.

I was extremely pleased with our time on Disney’s Castaway Cay.  It was laid back and peaceful.  I am definitely looking forward to a return trip!
