Disney’s Pirate’s Lair

February 12, 2013

Deep in Tom Sawyer Island, the ghosts of pirates’ past lurk in the shadows of caves.  Enter the caves to learn about the pirates who once roamed the beaches and other secret hide outs in search of their buried treasure.  Tom Sawyer Island has itself become the getaway for pirate fanatics after Pirates of the Caribbean.  This getaway was transformed into Pirate’s Lair in 2007 following the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Tom Sawyer Island

Pirate fans walk into Dead Man’s Grotto where their eyes of gold stare at the ”dead men’s chest”, a special treasure guarded well by Davy Jones!  Just outside Dead Man’s Grotto, guests can have a little fun with some games!  One highlight of this is trying to search for hidden treasure chests around the island.  Just somewhere on Pirate’s Lair, there is a special spot where, if you are good enough at the game, you can pull out a sunken treasure chest from under the water.

Davy Jones

The poor wrecked boat has let the treasure fall onto the bottom floor.  Do sea creatures have the ability to guard treasures on the sandy floors?  According to this situation, if you think you can get your hands on that chest, think again!  Someone is not letting go of it and that’s the surprise you ”pull” out when you see that a skeleton is still holding onto the chest as it gets dragged out from the water.  You didn’t see that coming, did you?  Apparently, whoever that pirate was, he is not giving you his treasure, even if it means claiming it after the death!  Let’s just say this skeleton in Disney’s Pirates Lair does not believe in ”til death do us apart” with his beloved treasure!

The chest only belongs to that fella and he will hold onto it for eternity.  It looks like pirates do believe in the afterlife of holding onto their treasure.  It’s okay if you’re left empty-handed, might as well respect those past pirates.  However, in Dead Man’s Grotto you can always try your luck at getting your hands on treasure again.  Located inside, there’s an area where you just have to slide your hand under to claim the treasure that ”appears” there.  But, oh, wait!  Pirates sure know how to fool one by pulling a magic trick of their own!  Disney’s Pirates Lair is the perfect example!  Now you see it……now you don’t!  ”Dead men tell no tales”!

Parasailing at Disney World

February 11, 2013

Fly away above the boat and see the beauty of Walt Disney World from the distance!  Just being far enough from this dreamland makes your heart increase in size with all the Disney excitement!  And nope, it’s not being a bird or a fly.  If you were thinking of Soarin’, you were pretty close.  Parasailing!  That’s right, parasailing at Disney World!

Disney's Contemporary Resort- Bay Lake

Parasailing at Disney World is available for guests who want to experience the magic from a different angle rather than on-premise.  This magic/water activity is held in front of Disney’s Contemporary Resort- Bay Lake as part of Sammy Duvall’s Watersports Centre.  The parasailing adventure comes in an array of different designs such as a smiley face, Mickey Mouse, and a pattern of different colors.

Depending how you organize your trip, the parasail is divided into the 450 ft. and 600 ft. which you can choose from.  The higher you go, the more views you will see.  But even at 450 ft., you should be able to get a pretty good view of the huge resort and take in those breathtaking moments of ”flying”.  Your sailing journey begins when you are released from the boat with the ”parachute” pulling you into full swing.  The engine of the boat pulls the parachute and for a good about 10 minutes you are up there seeing the different Disney hotels, Space Mountain, and Cinderella Castle!  Now this is what you call soarin’!

Parasailing at Disney World

Look into the sparkling waters of Bay Lake appreciating the views of nature and feeling that summer Florida breeze that cool off your bare feet!  It’s like another way of submersing your feet into the sand only way less hotter!  Once your journey ends, you are safely pulled back into the boat taking with you those special non-Disney park moments but yet having that same Disney magic that never leaves you.

Packing for a Disney Cruise

February 8, 2013

Packing for Disney is a lesson in itself, but packing for a Disney cruise?  A whole different matter!  Here are some tips for things not on the standard packing list.

CRUISE SPECIFIC ADD-ONS List when packing for a Disney Cruise

Currency Conversion Chart, in the event you’re travelling to a destination that doesn’t handle U.S. dollars.
If you’ve booked shore excursions of any kind, be sure to pack hard copies of the receipts
A watch with dual time zones will make it easier to keep track of the time difference if you’re headed far enough away from home.
A nightlight: inside state rooms in particular are pitch dark, and the soft glow of a nightlight is just enough to help you navigate to the bathroom – or to soothe a small child who doesn’t care for the dark.
Binoculars
A lightweight, foldable tote bag is always helpful when you want to head to the pool and don’t necessarily want to haul your carry-on bag. And in the event you buy too many souvenirs, you’ve got a last minute solution to getting it all home.
Ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper: ships are notorious for almost constant low-level noise, and if you think it may keep you up, an inexpensive set of earplugs may be the way to go. Another solution? Headphones to plug into your I-Pod or mp-3 player will block noise just as well.
An alarm clock: whether you’re in the inside stateroom or have your blackout blinds closed on the verandah window, it’s always nice to know what time it is without fumbling for a watch or cell phone.
Sun protection is a must: a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses; all of these are things you can buy at the onboard gift shop but probably at inflated prices. Do yourself a favor and pack them at home.
An over the door shoe caddy. For all of your shoes? No, actually to organize all of your toiletries and smaller items that don’t all fit on the countertop in the bathrooms. They’re available at almost any dollar store.
Extension cord or power strip. Plugs aren’t exactly plentiful in some staterooms – you may find your laptop’s charger cord won’t reach to the bed or the table. And with cameras, cell phones and more to charge, an extra outlet isn’t a bad idea.

Remember, when you are packing for a Disney Cruise it is vital to make sure you don’t leave those important essentials at home.  Use this list as a guide and you’ll be in great shape!
